Sociologist and university professor Edinho Silva has been appointed as the new minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic, taking the place of Thomas Traumann, who left his position Wednesday (Mar 25). The announcement was made by the president''s press office.

Silva worked as treasurer during Dilma Rousseff's reelection campaign last year, and as the head of the ruling Workers' Party (PT) in São Paulo.

A Sociology graduate from the State University of São Paulo (UNESP) in Araraquara, Silva also holds a master's degree in Production Engineering from the Federal University of São Carlos. Born in Pontes Gestal, in the São José do Rio Preto region, Silva pursued his political career in Araraquara, where was councilman and mayor for two terms in a row, from 2000 to 2008. He was also a state deputy, from 2011 to 2015.

The new minister's inauguration ceremony is slated for Tuesday (31).
