Over $100 million to be invested in Olympics security
The investment to be made in security by Brazil's federal government for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has been estimated at $107 million. The scheme will include state-of-the-art technology, with high-resolution cameras attached to balloons hovering 150 to 300 meters from the ground, which will remain in the city after the games are over.
Andrei Rodrigues, special secretary for large-scale events, from the Justice Ministry, announced there are now 30 thousand spaces available at training courses focusing on security for the Olympic Games, adding that anti-terrorism plans are being devised ahead of the international event.
“Brazil is a neutral country. It doesn't have a record of [activities] of this sort, and our efforts are an attempt to keep it like this. We're investing in intelligence, especially with the Federal Police and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency, in collaboration with several countries. We've been visited by the US Anti-Terrorism Association, and we're doing solid work to have a peaceful scenario,” Rodrigues said.
