Truckers stage highway protests in five states
Several highways are still partially blocked by truckers demanding a minimum price standard for freight services. The Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported Friday (Apr. 24) that protests are taking place in five states and causing traffic disruptions on 11 highways.
In the state of Mato Grosso, there are blockages in Lucas do Rio Verde, Rondonópolis, Diamantino, Nova Mutum, Sorriso, and Guarantã do Norte. In Ceará, the demonstration is concentrated close to to Tabuleiro do Norte, on BR 116. In Mato Grosso do Sul, there are protests near the capital, Campo Grande. There are also blockages in Barracão (Paraná) and Santa Rosa (Rio Grande do Sul).
On Wednesday (22), the truckers' representatives submitted a proposal to the federal government to create a nationwide price reference for freight rates, but the government found it unaffordable. The chief administrative aide to the president, Miguel Rossetto, said the government replied with a counter proposal, but the truckers rejected it.
As an attempt to end the deadlock, the National Ground Transportation Agency (ANTT) announced that a resolution will be published this Friday (24) creating a procedure to establish the rate reference.
