Maracanã Stadium now 65 years old
The Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, better known as Maracanã Stadium, is celebrating today (Jun 16) its 65th anniversary. The historical arena has served as the stage for a number of never-to-be-forgotten games, like the World Cup finals in 1950 and 2014.
Celebrations include a tour through the stadium—free for the first 500 visitors—as well as a birthday cake, and giveaways. Among the prizes were match tickets, T-shirts, and a souvenir with a sample of the stadium's grass.
Visits were also free of charge for guests celebrating their birthday at the venue and visitors called Mário Filho. Every one was given a chance to see Maracanã's First Golden Book, with messages written by famous personages, like Pope John Paul II.
Civil servant Mário Filho, 43, said that the renovation works for the 2014 World Cup changed the stadium for the better. “I know what it was like before, because I was practically born and raised here. Seeing the indoor premises, completely renovated and with new facilities, is really cool.”
Carlos Henrique, 58, is celebrating his birthday today, and was given the chance to join the tour. “It's a great honor to be here, since it's my first time after the renovation,” he said.
On Maracanã Stadium's Facebook page, users can choose the Brazilian national team they believe to be the country's all-time best.
