On June 6, athletes and environmentalists staged a demonstration on Botafogo beach against the pollution of the bay Fernando Frazão/Agência Brasil

The chairman of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Rio 2016 Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, said Wednesday (Aug 5) that “it takes more than just water and wind” for a city to be capable of hosting the Olympic sailing contests in place of Rio de Janeiro.

During a press conference on the preparations for the games, most questions posed by the international press focused on the cleanup of Guanabara Bay. Nuzman ruled out the possibility of moving the sailing events to the city of Búzios.

“The sewage problems are being addressed. We'll address them the best way possible,” he said.

Even though sewage treatment falls under the responsibility of the state government, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes estimated that 60 percent of the sewage poured into the bay will be treated by 2016—way below the 80 percent pledge made to the International Olympic Committee.

Issues notwithstanding, Brazilian sailing athletes have been gearing up for the competitions on Guanabara Bay.

“Pressure is not a bad thing. And it's important to make Rio solve [the problem],” Paes said.
