Firefighters found another body of tragedy in Mariana
Minas Gerais Fire Department found another body in the area hit by the wave of mud that devastated the region of Rio Doce in November 5th afternoon. The victim was found on Wednesday (Nov. 25) evening with the help of sniffer dogs in the village of Ponte Nova, 70 kilometers away from Mariana, in Minas Gerais. The body has not been identified yet.
Firefighters continue working in the search and rescue of 11 missing people after Samarco mining tailings dam collapsed. Until today (Nov. 26), 13 bodies had been found, but only 8 have been identified.
Fifty-three firefighters have been working in the searches and are divided into two groups. One of them is excavating with machinery supplied by Samarco and the other is working with sniffer dogs to have the most damaged area scanned.
According to the Fire Department, the mud surrounding Mariana remains unstable. When the sun shines, the mud hardens, but since it has been raining every day across the region, it softens again, making the work hard.
The wave of mud released contained about 62 million cubic meters of tailings and destroyed the village of Bento Rodrigues, devastated the rivers Rio do Carmo and Rio Doce, and now moves further to the ocean, off the coast of Espírito Santo, neighboring state of Minas Gerais.
