The sea of mud that moves along Rio Doce due to the failure of two dams in the town of Mariana, Minas Gerais, shall get to neighbor state Espírito Santo on Monday (Nov. 9). The information was disclosed by Brazil Geological Survey, responsible for monitoring the situation. The extensive mud flows have raised alert on the government of Minas Gerais municipalities that are along the river channel.

The monitoring report outlines that the sea of mud is expected to get to the town of Colatina on Monday afternoon, and to the town of Linhares from Monday to Tuesday (Nov. 10), both in Espírito Santo. Brazil Geological Survey reports that the sea of mud will not necessarily cause floods in other municipalities.

Located in Bento Rodrigues village, near the town of Mariana, Fundão and Santarém dams burst Thursday (Nov. 5), and flooded the area with mud, solid waste, and water residue from mining operations.

Brazil Geological Survey is constantly monitoring the water level alert for the Rio Doce river basin, which covers the eastern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo state. The goal is to alert 15 municipalities along the basin about the risk of flooding.
