General Mauro Sinott, head of the Army Special Operations Command, presented Thursday (Nov. 27), at the Naval War College (EGN in the original acronym) in Rio, the anti-terror planning operations that will be executed during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Rio 2016. The general said that there will be a specific anti-terror structure in all competition venues. He explained that the counter terrorism centers will be distributed by the Joint Command for Preventing and Combating Terrorism, attached to the Eastern Military Command, in Rio de Janeiro.

According to General Sinnott, "all task force structure of the Ministry of Defense will be divided [into groups] to attend each competition venue, setting out conditions to conduct [operations] with the public security task forces to give an immediate response, which is fundamental."

He also said that due to this strategy, all the armed forces, especially in the sector of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense, may undertake the work in partnership with the public security.

"We managed to create an environment of interaction with all public security task forces, in a fully integrated format in order to have agility, not only in operations in intelligence, but also for the use of force, if necessary," he reported.

The commander also spoke about the plan to be executed by the Ministry of Defense, in partnership with the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN in the original acronym) and the Ministry of Justice, to raise the awareness of people involved in several activities during the Games so they are alert to suspicious situations and are able to report them.

"Our goal is to reach as many people as possible to make them aware of the critically important preventive role they also perform in this process."

The operations against terrorism from the Ministry of Defense for Rio 2016 Olympic Games were presented at an international meeting organized by the Special Secretariat for Major Events of the Ministry of Justice, which met for three days at the Naval War College in Rio. Delegations from more than 70 countries will take part in the competitions next year.
