Rio 2016 International Broadcast Center delivered
The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, has officially handed over the International Broadcast Center (IBC) to the Rio 2016 Olympics Organizing Committee on Sunday (Nov. 8). It consists of two buildings located in the Olympic Park in Rio. This has been the first equipment delivered to the Olympic Committee, and will be used for the Rio 2016 Games only.
The IBC will generate and broadcast footage of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which will take place from August 5 next year. The main building has 12 studios of about 5,000 square meters each. It will provide a location for rights-holding television and radio broadcasters from around the world.
The IBC can hold up to 10,000 people, and will operate 24x7 during the games. Production and broadcasting will be the responsibility of Olympic Broadcasting Services company, which will now set up the television studios on site. The facilities are expected to be completely ready to operate on July 5, 2016.
The mayor of Rio said it is the first time in Olympics history that the IBC has been built with private funding. The project is part of a public-private partnership (PPP) for the Olympic Park, and the location will be converted into a business venture after the games are over.
“The IBC, London cost £400 million, somewhere around $790 million. Our Olympic Park doesn't cost that much. Our media center cost close to $105 million, and not a single penny was funded with taxpayer money. It's all corporate money,” the mayor said.
He assured that all 2016 Olympics facilities will be delivered on time. “We'll show that Brazil is not all about scandals and deadlines missed. We can be really serious about our job,” he said. The mayor noted that the Olympic Park that will stage an important part of the competition is 92% complete. After the event, the facility will be used as an education and sports center for students of local government-run schools and high-performance athletes.
