Donations to benefit children from Mariana
Contributions made by donors from all over Brazil towards the victims of the tailings dam's failure in Mariana (Minas Gerais), collapsed on November 5th, will be distributed among children from the affected areas. The decision was taken Monday (Jan. 4) by a committee formed by community representatives, Brazil's Bar Association, Mariana's Archdiocese, Trade Association, City Hall and the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais.
Donations have totaled more than $ 250,000 towards children who are studying. According to city officials, the money will be equally shared among minors, regardless the number of children for each family. Couples without children will receive the amount equivalent to one child.
Mariana Mayor Duarte Júnior reported he will make funds available to saving accounts on behalf of each child, who will only be able to use the money when they are 18. They have conducted a survey with the responsible agencies to estimate the number of children in the region. Information on how many children and the amount for each of them will be disclosed after the board meeting, scheduled for next Monday (Jan. 11), in Mariana.
