Forest fires increased 27.5% nationwide last year, from 184,000 outbreaks in 2014 to about 235,000 in 2015, according to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Based on the time series started in 1999, the result second only to the number of fires recorded in 2010 (249,000 fire spots).

Fires detected by satellite prevailed in 2015 least rainy season between August and December, with the peak of fires occurring in September (72,000 spots) and October (50,000 spots). The less critical months had been February, March, April and May, registering about 2,000 fires each.

The state with the highest occurrence of fires has been Pará, in the Brazilian region of Amazon, which had more than 44,000 spots recorded in 2015, up about 8,000 spots, compared with 2014. The second state has been Mato Grosso, in the Central West region, with 32,000 forest fires, up 4,000 spots compared with the previous year.
