Carnival in Pelourinho, in Salvador city, will pay tribute to the 100 years of samba. The first samba recorded was Pelo Telefone ("By the Phone") composed by Ernesto dos Santos—known as Donga—and the journalist Mauro de Almeida, in Rio de Janeiro. The Carnaval do Pelô, as the Pelourinho carnival is called by the revelers, is organized by the state government, and will receive attractions to celebrate the centenary of the musical genre, in addition to artists, bands and carnival blocks playing several other musical styles, like axé, reggae, MPB and afoxé.
"Pelourinho bursts with cultural diversity. They are not only about samba and samba composers. For the first night, we are paying a tribute to Bahia's great samba composers and to Paulinho da Viola, who is a great Brazilian samba composer." declared Jorge Portugal, state secretary for culture in Bahia. According to him, the party will have "every musical style you have ever imagined, coming from the afro-music in Bahia.”
Along the streets of the Historic Center, 22 musical groups—percussion bands, big and small wind bands—and 10 group of performers will parade to point out the old tradition of the street carnivals. In the afternoon, there will be a carnival for children.
