According to the Health Ministry, the figure released Friday (5) is almost twice as many as the number made public last week, when 10.9 million homes had been inspected. Marcelo Camargo/Agência Brasil

Approximately 20.7 million buildings—among them public, commercial, and industrial buildings, as well as homes—have been inspected as part of an effort to combat the Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits the Zika virus, as well as dengue and chikungunya fever. The number accounts for more than 30 percent of the 76 million buildings to be examined.

According to the Health Ministry, the figure released Friday (5) is almost twice as many as the number made public last week, when 10.9 million homes had been inspected. The ministry further noted that the total number of buildings to be checked was raised, jumping from the original 40 million to 67 million.

Altogether, 3,984 municipalities of the 5,570 set for an inspection were reported as checked by Thursday (4). The amount is 25 percent above the one observed the previous week—3,183 cities.

During the visits, 772.9 million buildings were identified as harboring breeding sites for mosquitoes, which adds up to 3.89% of the total visited. The government's goal is to reduce the infestation rate to under one percent. Also registered were 69,214 buildings in which agents were denied access, apart from the 4.7 million closed homes.

Ever since Monday (1), a provisional measure allows the forced entry of public health agents to buildings, public or private, that have been abandoned or that are likely to serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, in case there is no nobody to grant them access to the place.
