Rainstorm leaves at least 20 dead in São Paulo
At least 20 people died due to the rainstorms that hit São Paulo capital and its metropolitan area.
At least 21 people died in landslides caused by rainstorms that began on Thursday night (Mar. 10) in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. A landslide in Mairiporã left four dead, according to the Fire Department. Seven other people were taken alive to local emergency rooms.
In the municipality of Francisco Morato, nine people died in two incidents because of the rain. The storm led to a six-hour shutdown at the International Airport of Guarulhos, the city where two people died drowned. The central region of another nearby municipality, Franco da Rocha, was flooded because of the rain.
Several metropolitan train stations were flooded, causing disruptions in the train services in São Paulo city, where the Tietê and Pinheiros rivers overflowed. There were traffic jams at several points in the city.
