Brazil receives Olympic torch in Athens
The Olympic torch was officially delivered to the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games today (Apr. 27) as part of a ceremony held at the Panathenaic Stadium, in Athens—the stage for the first modern Olympic Games, in 1896. The torch was received by chairman Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
The torch was kindled last week and went on a tour through a number o Greek cities until it was handed over to the committee. Before coming to Brazil, it will stop in Switzerland, where it will be put in display during a ceremony in Geneva Friday (29), and at the Olympic Museum, in Lausanne.
Before reaching the Maracanã Stadium for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on August 5, the torch is to travel throughout the country for three months—a tour expected to involve 12 thousand people in 300 cities.
