Australian Olympic Committee urges extra care in Rio after athlete was robbed
Australia's Olympic Committee released a note saying they were sent a warning from the Federal Police of Australia recommending athletes coming to Brazil for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to be extra careful during their stay in Rio de Janeiro.
The note was made public Monday (Jun. 20) along with the country's sailing team, one day after Paralympic sailing athlete Liesl Tesch and her coach were robbed by two men while the former were riding their bikes near the hotel where they were staying. Liesl was pushed down to the ground and the bicycles were taken away. Neither of the victims was injured, the note says.
According to the communication, the Rio police are investigating the crime and providing assistance to the two Australian nationals. Both the Australian committee and the sailing team announced they were working in cooperation with the Australian Federal Police to ensure the safety of their delegation during the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
