Brazil: armed forces support requested for Rio 2016 Games
Rio de Janeiro acting Mayor Francisco Dornelles sent today (Jun. 15) an official letter to acting President Michel Temer, requesting the support of the armed forces in the security scheme of Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, during the period of July 24 to September 19.
Due to the high number of visitors in the city before and during Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the military shall routinely patrol the Red and Yellow lines, Avenida Brasil, Tom Jobim International Airport, which are the main access roads to the competition venues.
In the document, the acting mayor pointed out that the military police lacked operational resources to respond to all demands.
Dornelles also reported that during the games, the military police will not count on the support from the National Public Security Force for routinely police patrolling the city, since they will be extensively used in the internal security of the Olympic venues.
Government's support
On a visit to the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca, on Tuesday (14), interim President Michel Temer attended a meeting of the inter-ministerial working group for coordinating and monitoring the Games. Before the meeting, Temer met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, and Brazil Olympic Committee (COB) President Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
During a working group meeting last week in Brasília, Temer pointed out the importance of the Games for the country and reaffirmed the federal government's full support for organizing the event, when he said that the success of the Olympics means the country's success.
