Federal Judge Sergio Moro revoked the temporary arrest of former Finance Minister Guido Mantega, detained Thursday morning (Sep. 22) in São Paulo as part of Operation Car Wash. To justify his decision, Moro said that, taking into consideration Mantega's wife's health state and the seizure of documents already carried out at the homes of the investigated, there is no need to keep the onetime cabinet member under custody, as he can no longer interfere in evidence collection.

Moro did not consult with the Federal Prosecution Service or any police authority before issuing his ruling. He claimed that no one—neither the judge himself, nor any prosecutor or the police—was aware that Mantega's wife was to undergo a surgery “due to a serious illness.”
