Air authority rejected Bolivian airline request to fly from Brazil
Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) rejected a flight requested from Bolivia's Lamia Corporation airline to fly Brazil's football team Chapecoense from Brazil to Colombia for a tournament. The flight had planned to leave Brazil for Colombia on Monday (Nov. 29).
“The request was denied based on the Brazilian Aviation Code (CBAer) and the Chicago Convention on air service agreements between countries. The agreement with Bolivia, the home country of Lamia airline, does not include the requested operations,” ANAC's statement read.
Upon the refusal, the team left Guarulhos airport in São Paulo for Bolivia on a scheduled flight, and from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, they left on a Lamia chartered flight to Medellín, Colombia.
In its rejection document, ANAC said the team could be flown by a Brazilian or Colombian airline (or a combination of both) “at the contracting party's choice, in accordance with applicable international agreements.”
ANAC wound up its statement conveying its solidarity to the families of the victims of the plane crash near Medellín, Colombia, this morning.
Eighty-one people were on board and 75 died, according to Colombian authorities. The Chapecoense team members were on their way to Medellín to play their first South American football cup finals against Colombia's Atlético Nacional on Wednesday night (30). The return match was to take place in Curitiba, Brazil.
