The first week of joint effort at the Amazonas prison resulted in the release of 432 provisional prisoners. Part of them, according to the Amazonas Court of Justice (TJAM), will have to wear ankle monitor.

The measure is part of a package of measures adopted by the state government to reduce overcrowding and tension in the prison system. To increase the effort, the Brazilian Bar Association in Amazonas provided 50 volunteer lawyers.

TJAM Chief Flávio Pascarelli explained that the cases are being carefully and systematically analyzed, to decide what is the most recommended for each case: release of prisoners or adoption of alternative measures for serving the sentence. In 13 municipalities of the state's countryside, for example, 665 cases were analyzed, only 29 prisoners were granted provisional release.

"We will carefully analyze whether they continue subject to pre-trial or provisional detention. This analysis is made by a judge, a prosecutor and a public defender or lawyer. And I believe that, when it comes to someone who poses a threat to society, they shall not be released," Pascarelli said this Tuesday (Jan. 17) at the court in Manaus.

Prisoners recaptured

On the other hand, the state government continues to work in the search for fugitives from the Anísio Jobim prison complex (COMPAJ) after the prison riot on January 1 that caused the death of dozens of prisoners. According to the government, 83 prisoners from the Antônio Trindade Institute (IPAT) and the COMPAJ were recaptured. With that, 142 inmates are still on the run.
