At least 33 inmates at Monte Cristo rural penitentiary (PAMC) in Boa Vista, Roraima, were killed today (Jan 6). According to the State Justice Secretariat, tumult began at the unit early into the day.

The Military Police Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) stormed the prison early in the morning, and the situation is now under control. Details have not yet been disclosed by state authorities.

According to local media reports with footage as of today, prisoners may have been beheaded. The PAMC is the largest prison in Roraima, one of Brazil's northermost states bordering with Venezuela and Guyana.

The killings took place less than a week after 60 inmates were murdered in prisons in the neighbouring Amazonas state and a day after the federal government announced a National Public Security Plan in an attempt to clamp down on murder and gender-related killings, improve integrated crossborder crime control, and make Brazil's prison system more effective.
