In São Paulo prison riot, 200 prisoners escape

According to the Military Police Operations Center (COPOM), 200 prisoners escaped during a prison riot at the rural prison in the city of Bauru, in the countryside of São Paulo state. It is estimated that 79 fugitives have already been captured.

Prisoners and prison staff came into a conflict around 8:30 today (Jan. 24). Mattresses were burned and the Fire Department sent seven vehicles to the scene. No one was injured.

The prison was built for 1,124 inmates, but holds 1,427 prisoners. The unit works on a semi-open regime.
