Brazil's Federal Police launched operation Hunting Day (Dia da Caça in the original), aimed at fighting the illegal hunting of wild animals in five cities in the states of Pernambuco, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo. The group under probe, the police reported, is believed to have killed at least 170 animals, including specimens of endangered species.

Nine search and seizure warrants were served, and one person was taken to the police for questioning.

The probe was initiated after the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) found out that people were sharing videos and pictures on social media networks of animals illegally hunted.

The individuals under investigation will be charged with mistreatment, illegal hunting, and possession of firearms.
