After the temporary arrest of Brazilian Olympic Committee President Carlos Arthur Nuzman under Operation Unfair Play – Second Half-Time yesterday (Oct. 5), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the Brazilian Committee and ousted Nuzman  from his post with the international organization. The decision was announced Friday (6) on IOC's official website.

The decision is reported to have been based on accusations that Nuzman colluded in a vote-buying scheme aimed at bringing the 2016 Games to Rio de Janeiro. The ruling removed him from the Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and also led to the suspension of his prerogatives and duties as an honorary member of the international committee.

In the Brazilian Committee, the temporary suspension resulted in the freezing of subsidies and payments from the IOC to the Brazilian organization, which is now no longer able to “exercise its rights in the National Olympic Associations.”

The decision does not affect Brazilian athletes, and a team from the country will be welcomed in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, as well as other competitions administered by the IOC. Allowances paid to Brazilian athletes will not be interrupted.
