Four children were burnt to death Thursday morning (Oct. 5) at a daycare in Janaúba, northern Minas Gerais state, in southeastern Brazil.

At first it was reported a teacher was among the dead, but authorities later informed she is still alive. She had multiple cardiac arrests and is in a critical state.

City and police authorities reported the fire was started by a school security guard. The man, who also torched himself, was critically injured and died a few hours after care was provided.

Over 20 people were injured, among them children and adults. Eight cars and two helicopters were used to assist the victims, who were sent to hospitals nearby.

Off-duty firefighters were also called to action on account of the seriousness of the incident.
