An armed student opened fire against his class mates Friday (Oct. 20) at Colégio Goyases, a private school in Goiânia, state capital of Goiás. Goiânia is a mere 200 km (124 miles) away from Brasília, in the Central-West, where the seat of the Brazilian government is located.

The shots are believed to have claimed six victims, four of them were injured and two died on the scene.

Local news outlets report that the youth was in eighth grade—a school year for students aged 12 to 14 in the Brazilian system—and had been bullied by his peers, which is alleged to have motivated the attack. He is the son of a military police officer and claimed to have taken his father's gun.

The victims were sent to health care units in Goiânia.
