The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) decided to register Paraty and Ilha Grande, southern Rio de Janeiro state, as a world heritage site, which includes the historical center of Paraty and Ilha Grande.

This is Brazil’s first mixed heritage site, which brings together both cultural and natural assets. Of the over a thousand world heritage locations, only 39 are mixed places, across 31 countries.

Paraty and Ilha Grande now join the 21 other world heritage sites in Brazil, alongside the cities of Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais) and Olinda (Pernambuco), and the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha and the Pantanal, in Mato Grosso state.
