Petrobras bagged one of the most important awards in the oil and gas industry granted during the Brazilian edition of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC Brasil) for the set of innovations developed in the long-duration test of the Libra block, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos basin.

The reintroduction of gas during the long-duration test is one of the nine bits technology used in oil and gas production in the Libra block. These innovations were vital for the oil giant to reach a new monthly production record in the area with a single offshore well, which totaled a daily 58 thousand barrels of oil equivalent.

Technological legacy

Petrobras Exploration and Production Director Carlos Alberto Pereira de Oliveira talked about Libra’s technological legacy. “The development of innovative solutions has allowed us not only to cut operational costs but also to speed up the implementation of long-duration tests—key to obtaining information on both the reservoir and the production. As was the case with other pre-salt enterprises, there’s no doubt that Libra boasts high generation capacity and a transformative potential for the industry,” he argued.

In its reserves, Libra has oil with its own special properties, different from that of other areas, like a higher amount of associated gas and a more significant presence of carbon dioxide—44 percent of the associated gas in the reservoir—in addition to common pre-salt properties, like wide oil columns with excellent porosity.

Oliveira said that “since the scenario is unmatched in the sector, our experts and partners devised solutions were the first of their kind. We innovated, for instance, by using up all of the carbon dioxide produced, boosting productivity in the reservoir. We were also bold when we carried out the operation to prelaunch flexible lines with buoys deep in the sea even before platforms were contracted,” the director reported.

The accolade will be handed to the company on October 30 during the Brazilian edition of the event, to be held in Rio de Janeiro.
