Russian embassy in Brasília faces bomb threat
A bomb threat at the Russian embassy, in Brasília’s South Embassy Sector, had the Fire Department as well as civil and military police mobilized late Thursday morning (Jul 14). According to the Fire Department, the embassy security had received a phone call earlier today in which a person threatened to blow up the facilities with a bomb. Security officers were called and searched the area.
The operation was dubbed Petardo, after an object found in the embassy. BOPE, the special operations battalion of Brazil’s Military Police, surrounded the site and requested a larger security perimeter. Traffic on nearby roads was blocked.
The bomb squad examined a package left at the diplomatic headquarters. As a safety procedure, the bundle was detonated. Five vehicles from the Fire Department and one for monitoring dangerous products, such as toxic and chemical artifacts, have also been deployed on the site.
