Brazil unveils campaign for empowerment of black women

On the Black, Latin, and Caribbean Women’s Day, July 25, the Brazilian Bar Association in the Federal District (OAB-DF) launched a campaign to celebrate the empowerment of black women.
Nildete Santana, head of the association’s Women’s Commission, said the initiative was dubbed “Snap out of the trance!” in reference to racism and sexism, which she termed “a collective outbreak.”
“It’s a crucial opportunity to urge society to join the debate about the reality of one of the most oppressed and subdued sectors of Brazilian society—black women. It’s also a chance to bring back to mind the ancestry of black women in Brazil, with their history of struggle, resistance, and involvement,” she went on.
The date was instituted 30 years ago, after the first Meeting of Afro-Latin American and Afro-Caribbean Women, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, aimed at casting light on the struggle of black women in the region.
