Brazil’s Federal Police today (Oct 14) launched Operation Fair Play, aimed at repressing “crimes against the national financial system, against popular economy, money laundering, and criminal organization.”

Today’s actions are said to continue probes initiated in 2021, targeting a “business group active in financial investments,” linked to the promotion of events, particularly concerts.

Some 50 federal agents are joining today’s operation, with the execution of seven temporary arrest warrants and 18 search and seizure orders in the cities of Manaus, Boa Vista, Belem, and Natal.

“In addition to the warrants, rulings stipulated the freezing of assets of the individuals and companies investigated, as well as the seizure of movable and immovable property that might be in their possession,” the police stated.

Events

According to the authorities, the company under scrutiny is linked to a business group that operates “in a wide range of business segments” related to the promotion of events, like concerts, with “national attractions in the city of Manaus, fishing championships, the sponsorship of e-sports teams, and even the purchase and sale of cars.”

To succeed, the suspects decided to lure chiefly civil servants and retirees.

“In two years, the investigated business group handled approximately BRL 156 million. Partners and representatives, in turn, showed tremendous asset growth while boasting a high standard of living online, living in luxury condominiums, making domestic and international trips and acquiring luxury vehicles and boats,” the police went on to report.

According to the Federal Police, criminal practices are being investigated ranging from crimes against the financial system and popular economy to money laundering and criminal organization. Combined, penalties can top 30 years in prison.
