The inauguration ceremony of the new president of Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), journalist Kariane Costa, will take place Monday (Jan. 16) at the company’s headquarters in Brasília. Costa will be in charge of leading the government transition of Brazil’s public broadcasting company to a new administration.

“Responsible for the transition to a new management—to be implemented in the coming months—she is also going to serve as acting director-general, with the challenge of restoring EBC’s public, democratic, and plural character,” a text published by the company says, while reaffirming the organization’s role in the country’s complementary system of public, private, and state networks.

The event will be attended by the head of the President Lula’s Communication Secretariat, Minister Paulo Pimenta, who determined that the transition should be conducted by the company’s permanent staff, representatives of society, and professionals in the field.

Four other women have been named to assume management positions during the transition: Rita Freire, chair of the EBC’s Board of Curators, who was removed after President Michel Temer took office; Juliana Cézar Nunes, a company employee; and journalists Nicole Briones and Flávia Filipini.

Costa’s appointment can be found in a decree signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, published in an extra edition of the country’s Official Gazette on Friday (Jan. 13).
