Another 139 charged over Brasília’s Jan. 8 riots
Federal prosecutors have charged another 139 with participating in the anti-democratic riots staged in Brasília on January 8. The rapporteur of the case is Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Of those targeted, 137 were arrested in the act in the Planalto presidential palace and two were held at the Três Poderes square carrying firecrackers, knives, tear gas, and items used to make Molotov cocktails.
The group is accused of the crimes of armed criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, and damage to federal property and to a heritage site.
So far, 835 people have been reported—of whom 645 were inciters (as they participated in the protests or were arrested outside the Army headquarters, but did not ransack the buildings), 189 were direct participants in the storming and ransacking. One public agent was accused of omission. A total of 941 individuals detained in connection with the uprising are said to remain in prison.
