Petrobras to double units with biodiversity conservation plans
This year, Petrobras aims to double the number of units and facilities covered by its Biodiversity Action Plans, reaching a total of 36. These plans serve as essential tools for implementing conservation and recovery actions, ensuring the protection of nature and the well-being of local populations.
"Since 2020, we have successfully doubled the number of company units and facilities equipped with Biodiversity Action Plans. Our goal is to fulfill approximately 60 percent of our commitment by the end of 2023. As the leading company in the country, Petrobras recognizes its fundamental role in biodiversity conservation and the promotion of sustainable development," stated Daniele Lomba, Petrobras' Executive Manager of Health, Environment, and Safety.
The plans are currently being developed in areas housing refineries, thermoelectric plants, and offshore exploration and production units. A notable example is the Gaslub Complex in Itaboraí, situated in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. This complex is near Guanabara Bay, within the Atlantic Forest biome. The region is ecologically significant, hosting vital watersheds and several protected areas.
The center covers an area of 45 square kilometers and features a natural gas processing unit, which is expected to process a volume of 21 million cubic meters per hour of gas extracted from the Santos Basin's pre-salt layer.
The Guapiaçu Project plans to conserve four endangered mammal species: tapir, puma, paca, and woolly spider monkey (muriqui). These species play a key ecological role in the habitats of the Atlantic Forest, in addition to the restoration of mangroves around Guanabara Bay, contributing to artisanal fishing and local biodiversity.
