Indigenous products to feature origin seal
The Indigenous Peoples of Brazil Seal, which identifies the origin of family farming, extractivist, and artisanal products, can now be obtained starting this Friday (Jan. 5). This certification will denote both the ethnic and territorial origins of the products.
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming, individual producers as well as associations, cooperatives, and companies that primarily use raw materials of indigenous origin can apply for the seal, provided the community consents to the identification.
To obtain the seal, applicants must specify the indigenous land, village, ethnic group, and names of the producers. Additionally, they must submit a declaration of compliance with environmental and indigenous legislation, along with the application and meeting minutes for the community's approval. All these documents must be submitted to the Brazilian national indigenous authority Funai.
The Indigenous Peoples of Brazil Seal is valid for five years and can be renewed six months before its expiration. It is linked to the National Family Farming Seal, and indigenous producers can choose to use either or both seals.
