Rio Carnival: 8 million enjoyed revelry
Around 8 million people enjoyed Carnival in Rio de Janeiro this year. Six million revelers took part in 399 street parades. Two million people were divided between the samba school parades and popular dance parties.
A total of BRL 5 billion was injected into the local economy, resulting in BRL 500 million collected in Service Tax (ISS), furthermore, the event generated over 50,000 direct jobs.
The Tourism Company of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro (Riotur), linked to the city administration, released the balance of this year's Carnival on Wednesday (Feb. 21). President of Riotur, Ronnie Costa, stated, "It was a record-breaking Carnival in terms of attendance, service tax collection in February, and infrastructure. We set a new record with 60 popular dances."
According to the presented balance sheet, the city center had the highest concentration of Carnival groups, totaling 113. Following closely was the south zone, with 88 groups.
During the six days of parades by the Gold Series, the Special Group, and the children's samba schools, the Marques de Sapucaí Avenue saw approximately 120,000 people per day. Additionally, the popular dances organized by Riotur attracted 720,000 people across 60 Carnival concert stages over four days.
