Rio de Janeiro has been officially confirmed as the host city for the BRICS Leaders' Summit in 2025, scheduled for July 6 and 7. The announcement followed a meeting on Saturday (Feb. 15) between Mayor Eduardo Paes, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, and federal government representatives.

On January 1, Brazil assumed the rotating presidency of BRICS, an international cooperation group consisting of emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran.

For the municipal administration, Rio de Janeiro’s selection to host the summit underscores its role as a key strategic hub for international events. The summit will be held just one year after the city hosted the G20 Summit.

On social media, Mayor Eduardo Paes shared a video with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira commenting on the choice. “Rio is once again the capital of the world—hosting the G20 last year, now BRICS, and who knows, maybe I’ll get the presidential decree signed to make Rio the honorary capital of Brazil,” said the mayor.

Rio's municipal administration established the Rio BRICS Committee, tasked with creating the "Rio BRICS Calendar," which will consolidate initiatives and activities through the end of 2025, when Brazil's BRICS presidency concludes.
