Rio de Janeiro to host BRICS finance ministers’ meeting

Rio de Janeiro will host a meeting of BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors, representing the bloc's 11 member countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Indonesia. The event is scheduled for July 5, the day before the Leaders' Summit.
The BRICS Finance Track meeting, co-chaired by Brazil's Ministry of Finance and Central Bank, was confirmed on Friday (Feb. 21) by Ambassador Tatiana Rosito, the Ministry of Finance's Secretary for International Affairs. Rosito will also co-chair the first meeting of deputy finance ministers and central bank vice presidents in Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday (26).
Sherpas meeting
On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 25 and 26, Brasília will host the first meeting of BRICS sherpas under Brazil's presidency. Sherpas are special envoys of the heads of state and government, responsible for steering discussions toward the Leaders' Summit. The meeting will be chaired by Ambassador Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, Secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Brazil’s BRICS sherpa.
The meetings will introduce BRICS sherpas to Brazil's priorities as the group's chair, which include:
- use of local currencies in financial operations;
- cooperation in healthcare;
- financing actions to combat climate change;
- BRICS trade, investment, and finance;
- governance of artificial intelligence;
- BRICS institutional development.
The meeting will open on Tuesday (25) in Brasília, with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira delivering the inaugural address. A special session featuring a speech by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva may be held on the second day of the event.
