Brazil condemns sending funds and weapons to Syria

The Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry, Eduardo dos Santos, Brazil's envoy to the Syrian peace conference said Wednesday (Jan. 22) that the Syrian conflict cannot be stopped if the government and the opposition continue receiving resources and weapons from abroad.

According to the ambassador, only a firm commitment on both sides to cease fire could put an end to a civil war that has left over 130 people dead. Brazil's proposals to solve the conflict include establishing a neutral transitional body with full powers as well as promoting comprehensive dialogue; ensuring the safe return of refugees; holding those violating human rights legally accountable and lifting regional and unilateral economic sanctions imposed on Syria.

The Syrian peace talks are going on in Montreux, Switzerland, with representatives of about 40 countries. On Friday (Jan. 24), negotiations will begin between Syria's government and opposition in Geneva.

Santos warned against conducting the conference debates toward dictating Syria's decisions or complying with military confrontation. “The best scenario for this Conference is to form a broad and solid commitment to help Syrians to peacefully overcome their differences through negotiations,” he said.

Finally, he called for international solidarity and shared responsibility when dealing with Syrian refugees. “Since September 2013, Brazil has decided to facilitate entry visas to all those Syrian nationals seeking asylum,” he recalled.
