Brazil's Foreign Ministry (Itamaraty) issued a note Monday (Feb. 16) condemning the killing of 21 Christian Egyptians kidnapped in Sirte, Libya, by the Islamic State (ISIL). The extremist group posted a video on Sunday (Feb. 15) showing the beheading of the hostages.

“The Brazilian government hereby expresses its outrage at the brutal killing, allegedly on Libyan territory, of 21 Egyptian workers by members of the group calling itself the Islamic State. The government and the Brazilian people strongly condemn all religious intolerance and political violence,” the note read.

The UN Security Council also condemned the “heinous” murder of 21 Christians. “This crime once again shows the brutality of ISIL, which is responsible for crimes and abuses against people of all faiths, ethnicities and nationalities, and without regard to any basic value of humanity,” it said in a statement.
