Extradition granted for two foreign nationals

The Supreme Federal Court (STF) granted extradition filings for two foreign nationals on Tuesday (Feb. 24). Peter Michael Chapman from Britain and Attila Varga from Hungary had their extradition granted by unanimous decision. In Varga's case, however, the final decision is in the government's hands.

Chapman is charged with six counts of bribery, reportedly committed between 2007 and 2009 when he worked for Australia-based Securency International Pty Limited. He bribed the representative of another company to issue naira notes (the Nigerian currency) under an 11 million euro contract.

Attila Varga was charged with aggravated assault against his partner and “alleged offense comparable to extortion.” Since he is being prosecuted in Brazil, his extradition should only take place at the end of the case based on Brazilian law on foreign nationals. However, he can be expelled from the country before that if it is in the interests of Brazil's government.

Varga has been in custody over drug trafficking since 2012 in Rio Branco, Acre in the Amazon region. He is reported by the STF as saying he has no intention of challenging any extradition requests.
