Italy authorizes extradition of convicted Brazilian banker
The Court of Cassation in Rome authorized the extradition of former Banco do Brasil Marketing Director Henrique Pizzolato. He was charged with money laundering and embezzlement and sentenced to serve 12 years, seven months in prison in Brazil, but fled to Italy on a false passport 17 months ago.
The ruling is now pending the approval of Italy's Justice Minister Andrea Orlando. Once the ministry is officially notified, the Italian authorities will have 20 days to make the decision.
According to the judges who reviewed the case, Brazil's prisons are in condition of ensuring Pizzolato's safety. This latest decision, made on Thursday (Feb. 12), was an important victory for Brazilian authorities after the Italian court rejected the petition for extradition in October.
Interpol is on standby preparing its operation to arrest Pizzolato, whose official location is in Formiginia, near Bologna.
Following instructions for Interpol to arrest him, Pizzolato turned himself in to the Italian authorities on Thursday (Feb. 12).
