Brazil praises Maduro's decision to hold legislative elections
Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Relations reported Tuesday (Jun 23) that it “was glad to hear” about the announcement made by President of the Venezuelan National Electoral Council Tibisay Lucena, who drew up the country's electoral calendar and slated the elections for the National Assembly for December 6.
“The Brazilian government would like to welcome the confirmation of the official invitation for the observation mission of the Union of South American Nations [Unasur] to keep a close watch on the electoral process during the period which is to have its high point on the election day, December 6,” the ministry declared in a note.
Holding legislative elections was among the demands made by Unasur to Nicolás Maduro's administration as one of the measures aimed at seeking a peaceful solution for the political crisis facing Venezuela. Fixing a date for the parliamentary elections was also required by members of the country's opposition, among whom politicians and dozens of students, who went as far as to start a hunger strike.
On Monday (22), Venezuela's National Electoral Council also set the deadline for electoral registration (July 8), and the period during which candidates should present themselves—August 3 through 7. Campaigning is to take place from November 13 to December 3.
