Brazil chancellor in US to address children issue
Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Relations Aloysio Nunes is flying to the US Wednesday (Jul. 4) to address the case of the Brazilian children separated from their parent while illegally immigrating to the US.
During a seminar on competitiveness and foreign trade last week, the Brazilian chancellor told the press he was to meet with Brazil’s ten consuls in the US in order to appraise the situation involving the 51 Brazilian children who have been separated from their parents.
“We have ten consuls doing an extraordinary job of assisting these children, which includes identifying each case, providing legal support, etc. I’ll meet with them in order to ascertain what’s been happening in each jurisdiction and see how [the Brazilian Foreign Ministry] can contribute to help them in this task,” the minister declared.
Aloysio Nunes did not say whether he is to meet with American authorities during the visit, adding that this agenda would be in the hands of Brazilian Ambassador Sergio Amaral, in Washington.
Since May, the so-called zero tolerance policy over illegal immigration, adopted by President Donald Trump, has led to over 2 thousand children being separated from their parents when crossing the Mexico–US border.
Last Wednesday (20), after considerable pressure from both domestic and international forces, Trump signed an executive decree bringing an end to such splittings. The solution is believed to keep children arrested near their parents.
