Chancellor: Not enough info on Brazil student killed
In a statement made today (Jul. 27), Brazilian Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes said that Brazil will reiterate its requests for detailed information on the circumstances surrounding the killing of the Brazilian student in Nicaragua. He said that Brazil appealed to the Organization of American States (OAS) to intervene in the violent situation in Nicaragua.
“We’ve made an appeal with the Organization of American States for dialog, a position that could end violence, not just violence from the police forces, but also the most outrageous violence, which is the violence from the paramilitary forces against movements that seek a political overhaul in this country.”
Nunes said that calling Brazilian and Nicaraguan ambassadors was “a diplomatic gesture that evinces Brazil’s deep indignation with violence in Nicaragua, which claimed the life of a Brazilian woman.”
Brazilian student Raynéia Gabrielle Lima was killed last Monday (Jul. 23) with a shot to her chest in Managua, capital of Nicaragua. The murder was announced by Ernesto Medina, president of the American University (UAM), and is supposed to have been perpetrated by the member of a military group.
In an interview in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Aloysio Nunes is taking part in the 10th Brics Summit Meeting, the minister also complained about the first information collected from official Nicaraguan sources. If necessary, the Brazilian government may adopt further multilateral measures.
“The news reported by the Nicaraguan government is that it was a paramilitary security agent. Who? What’s the caliber of the gun? Under what circumstances did it take place? The incident still needs clarification, and we are going to insist, because it seems utterly unacceptable to us,” the minister said.
