Bolsonaro talks Venezuela with OAS head
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had a meeting Tuesday morning (Mar. 19) with Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General Luis Almagro in Washington. They talked about the crisis in Venezuela, the challenges facing democracy, human rights, development, and security, Almagro said.
“Today we met with President Bolsonaro, Chancellor Ernesto Araújo, and cabinet minister to advance the restoration of democracy in Venezuela initiated by acting President Juan Guaidó,” Almagro wrote on his Twitter. The debate also encompassed measures to encourage the fight against corruption and organized crime.
The OAS, Brazil, the US, and several other countries and international institutions have recognized Guaidó’s status as Venezuela’s self-proclaimed president. President Nicolás Maduro, however, criticizes the acknowledgment and has pledged to remain in power.
On social media, Bolsonaro mentioned the talks about Venezuela, Cuba, and the preservation of individual liberties, and criticized the governments of both countries.
