In a note released Thursday (Mar. 21), Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday (Mar. 21) mentions the statement made public by the Lima Group in which the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guiana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Peru vehemently reject the illegal detention of Roberto Marrero, chief of staff of self-proclaimed President of Venezuela Juan Guaidó.

The text also condemns the unacceptable violation of the residence of Congress member Sergio Vergara. In the note, the Lima Group “demands the illegitimate and dictatorial regime  of Nicolás Maduro to immediately release Marrero and fully respect Vergara’s parliamentarian jurisdiction.” The agency also urges international human rights organizations to use their powers with resolve and promptness.

“We hold Maduro’s regime accountable for the security and personal integrity of Mr. Roberto Marrero and Sergio Vergara and demand the end of the harassment targeting Venezuelan democrats and the systematic practices of arbitrary detention and torture in Venezuela,” the document ends saying.

The Lima Group is made up of Brazil and 14 other countries in the region. Of these, 11 do not recognize Nicolás Maduro as legitimate president of Venezuela, including Brazil.
