The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe launched this Tuesday (7) an appeal for mandatory vaccination to be adopted only as a last resort.

Hans Kluge said that it is first important to sensitize the population to the importance of receiving the vaccine. Only after all alternatives have been exhausted will it be acceptable to force the vaccine on Europeans, he added.

"Mandatory vaccination is an absolute last resort and only applicable when all viable options to improve vaccination rates have been exhausted," he said.

As for the Ômicron variant, Kluge reported that, as of yesterday, there were 432 confirmed cases of the new variant in European territory, including 21 countries.

In an online press conference, the WHO director asked, given the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic, for better protection for children aged 5 to 14, currently the most affected age group.

He also made an appeal to "stabilize" the pandemic crisis, defending the need to promote vaccination and apply measures such as the use of masks, ventilation in closed spaces and testing. He was "cautious" and "concerned" about the Ômicron variant.
