Ukraine's diplomat in Brazil suggests conversation between presidents
The Deputy Chief of Mission at the Ukrainian embassy in Brazil Anatoliy Tkach suggested on Monday (Feb. 28) - at a press conference - that Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro talks over the phone with Ukraine’s President Volodmir Zelensky to clarify what has been taking place in his country.
“I think the president of Brazil is misinformed. Perhaps it would be interesting for him to talk to the Ukrainian president to see another position and have a more objective view,” Tkach stated after being asked about statements made on Sunday (Feb. 27) by Bolsonaro about the conflict.
Tkach said he hopes Brazil will maintain its position at the UN, where the Brazilian representative Ambassador Ronaldo Costa Filho condemned the conflict on Monday (Feb. 28) at the UN Emergency General Assembly.
When asked if he would like Brazil to take more action, Ukraine's chargé d'affaires said he expects “greater support and greater condemnation from Brazil towards Russia. We must stop this aggression.”
“Right now, it's not about supporting Ukraine, it's about supporting democratic values, international law,” said the diplomat. According to him, the current conflict in Ukraine is not just a problem for the country itself," but for Europe and the world".
Tkach mentioned data released by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, according to which 2,040 civilians, including 45 children, have been injured so far. 352 deaths including 16 children have also been reported, Ukraine's highest authority in Brazil added.
