Brazil’s National Council of Justice on Tuesday (Mar. 22) (CNJ) launched the Judiciary’s Pact for Human Rights. The move aims to promote efforts to enforce the rights laid forth in the Constitution by establishing technical and operational cooperation agreements.

Among the measures is the monitoring and enforcement of the decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) as well as international treaties in the area, in addition to bringing the subject into entrance exams for the judiciary, and promoting training and the knowledge of previous court rulings on the matter.

According to the head of the Supreme Court and the National Council of Justice, Justice Luiz Fux, the measure aims to open strategic pathways to guide the judiciary in the defense of human rights.

“The launch of this initiative materializes the affirmation of an institutional policy aimed at strengthening the protection and promotion of human rights by the Judiciary, as has been own goal over the past two years, in line with the relevant mission of the National Council of Justice,” he declared.

The National Office of Women’s Ombudsman

On another front, the National Council of Justice this month inaugurated the National Office of Women’s Ombudsman, a body that should provide a space for receiving reports and complaints about the progress of lawsuits linked to violence against women.

The office will receive and forward reports to the relevant authorities, provide information about judicial procedures, and offer advice to women who are victims of violence.
